The Way of Life
Purpose: to encourage the people to live according to God’s Word.
Proposition: to know the importance of God’s word in our life, by knowing the way of an upright/righteous man and consequences of the way of the sinners/ungodly people.
Introduction
The Psalms are written as poetry, they are prayers and praises toward Almighty God.
The first chapter of Psalm describes the man blissful state with the Lord. The blessings of those who make God their LORD and the punishment for those who do not.
This wisdom Psalm basically functions as an introduction to the entire book of Psalms. The theme is as big as the whole bible because it tells of people, paths and ultimate destinations. By two cycles of contrast, Psalm 1 separates all people into their respective spiritual categories:
- A picture of the Godly
- A picture of the Ungodly
Main Points
I. The Way of Godly Man (Psalm 1:1-3)
the passages describe a picture of godly man who walks, stands and sits with the Word of God and the result of his/her obedience.
a] He/she is called “Blessed” (v.1)
The word “blessed” or in Hebrew word “Makarios(mak-ar’-ee-os) is also means “happy” in English.
Same word Jesus used in his Sermon on the Mount, the Beatitides (Matt.5:3-12), here Jesus described the character of a true faith and salvation, that happy is he who do the will of God not the kind of happiness that the world offers like riches, abundance, leisure and such things.
b] He/she loves the Word of God (v.2)
Loving the word of God means reading and meditating on it. Joshua 1:1-9, we see God has appointed Joshua as the successor of Moses after his death to lead the Israelites, God told him to meditate the Book of the Law(God’s word) day and night, meaning to read with thoughtfulness, to linger over God’s word because this is the main spiritual food of life of those who served him.
The promise of God’s blessing in the great responsibility has given to Joshua. The principle here is central of all spiritual effort and exercise, namely the deep understanding and application of Scripture at all times.
Even into his old age, Joshua never failed to remind the people of Israel to serve God [the people said to Joshua, “we will serve the Lord our God, we will obey him alone” Jos.24:24)
c] They prosper in all they do. (v.3)
Delighting in the Word of God produces obedience, obedience produces prosperity.
The man was compared to a tree planted besides stream waters. Bearing fruits in its season and its leaf does not wither.
The same is also described in Jeremiah 17:7-8
A man planted and rooted in the word of God will always be blessed. As what James said.[ James 1:21]
II. The Way of Ungodly Man (Psalm 1:4-6)
but the way of the ungodly is exactly the opposite, God hates the way of the ungodly.
a] His/her acts are worthless (v.4)
Out of the heart of wicked man produces iniquities…[Matthew 15:19-20 NKJV]
b] He/she has no place among the godly.
“Everyone who does evil hates the Light…[John 3:20 NIV]
“Don’t team up with those who are unbelievers…[2 Cor.6:14 NLT]
c] His/her destination is destruction
The wrath of God is against ungodly…[Romans 1:18-19NLT]
The ungodly will be thrown to the Lake of Fire….[Revelation 21:8]
III. The Only Way….
But there is still hope for the sinners. [John 14:6]
Jesus is the Living Water.[John 4:14]
Jesus is the Alpha and the Omega. [Revelation 21:6]
Conclusion
To be a Godly Person is to WALK not, STAND not, or SIT not with the Ungodly people…BUT Delights in the LAW of the LORD, by reading it, understanding it and applying it in his/her life…day in – day out.
The Results, is a HAPPY LIFE and the PROMISE OF GOD is whatever you do……you will SUCCEED…you will OVERCOME… and you will PROSPER…..
